In these volatile times you've got to be prepared for the worst! So why not design yourself a nice, pointy weapon?

Create a new, pointy implement of pain to fend off those would-be cyber attackers! Post your sketches along with final designs so that everyone can see the directions you explored. Make them simple, or super complex! The choice is yours!

Challenge 15: 3 Panel Comic Strip

There were two challenges for me with this topic: finding the time to create something to a higher standard than a lot of the previous work I've posted here, and finding a topic to post about!

The second challenge solved itself the other day after I did a simple character for kicks. Hop over to my blog to check it out. Otherwise, finding the time came from taking a step back from a major project that I'm currently working on to catch my breath, something I have been neglecting for a while.

If I can improve my writing chops or find a collaborator, I wouldn't mind doing a few more strips about Demons in Hell.

Challenge 15: 3 Panel Comic Strip

I struggled with this one hehe. This comic is simply a representation of those days that change our lives. In my life thus far, the significance of such days are rarely based on particular events. Instead, their significance is most often based on sharing time with those close to us. I often find myself at the end of such days knowing "I will remember this day". More specifically, I find myslef thinking "I will remember how i FELT today". I'm not sure if any of you have ever had that same feeling at the end of a day- though I'd presume you have. Each time I get that sensation, it's like as if a part of me gets retained in that instant. In a way, the end of such a day is saddenning. However, it is also comforting to know that our state of mind that day can be forever captured and remembered. I feel as though the collective of these instances have the power to really guide and mold us. I'm always happy when I realize that today is a daywhere a part of me will always stay.

Anyways lol it's obvious that my comic doesn't even come close to encapsulating the thought, but I thoughtt I would share anyways! Hope you enjoy.

Oh and please listen to the opening music to the track Paris by Groove Armada while looking at the comic haha. Somewhat of an inspiration.

I bought a tablet recently and thought I'd try drawing non-vector stuff for a change. This is tough! I miss vectors already lol...

Work in progress at the moment. Got inspired by Scott's idea of a bitter Red Riding Hood that's become a wolf hunter. I was going to draw her hood made of wolf's skin.. and most of her clothes too but ended up straying super far from that and reached this generic anime character deal :( I'll fix it up soon! Otherwise this belongs more to the "Anything" challenge.

Well it seems I'm in the mood to draw, so here's my second post of the night! Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil is definately my all-time favorite game so I thought I'd pay homage to its titular protagonist, Klonoa! This game had a great soundtrack, awesome environments and some really memorable characters. I'm holding the game case right now and there's a sticker on it that reads "PREOWNED $64.99" - I didn't remember PS2 games being this expensive! I'm sure its a whole lot cheaper now and i really recommend it for anyone that hasn't played it.

The last topic was extended by 1 week so that people had more of a chance to submit something. If you didn't manage to submit something while the topic was 'live' you're always welcome to post later! Same goes for any of the previous topics, even one that you have already participated in! You never know when inspiration will strike!

As the title of this post suggests, the latest challenge is Funny Yearbook Pictures. You can either sift through your highschool yearbook and do a funny charicature of someone or you can come up with some fictional people! Maybe try to recreate an entire page from a yearbook with kooky characters!

The thumbs above were actually done a couple of days after this challenge started with the intention of fleshing one of them out into a nice painting. Alas, I got caught up with other things and wasn't able to take one of them to a final version.

The abstract image above was done as a personal challenge to try a different technique. It was created by overlaying several images on top of one another and then finding shapes within them to create the entrance to the cookhut. It was fun to do and something that is definately worth trying out!

A great turnout for our first 'anniversary' challenge! Well done all who were able to post!

For the next topic we're taking a page from a fantastic art book called "The Skillful Huntsman" which is based on a story written by The Brothers Grimm.

For those who are not familiar with the book, it follows the visual development of the tale by 3 students who were attending Art Center College of Design and were challenged to visualize the world of the story. If you are interested in reading the story, it can be found here.

One aspect of the world is a 'cookhut' that the Princess is forced to remain in and cook for all who desire food. However, she cannot ask them to pay. This challenge tasks you with designing the exterior and/or interior of the hut! Don't let the term 'hut' keep you from exploring size though. It is simply a place where food is served.

So that's the challenge! If this topic is outside of your usual drawing comfort zone then it is in your best interest to participate and learn from everyone else that posts and comments!

This challenge will end on Monday, April 6th.

Hey everyone! This is my first post andI'm pretty excited about getting in on this blog. I need the motivation to draw a little more than I do. Unfortunately my house is in the midst of a renovation and I can't find my photoshop software anywhere amongst the mess. Hopefully my little sketches will do for now (though I'm not very good at colouring anyhow hehe). Anyways I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed looking through the past posts that you guys have done - there are some really impressive pieces! During the period of work today where my brain started to become ooze, I noticed that someone had a torn apart "Dancing Brobee" doll at their desk. You could see the horrible robotic innards exposed like a surf worn stone left sitting on the beach for thousands of years...

...I think I got too into that last bit.

So! That's the origin story (ever popular in comic books these days) of "Zombee Brobee"! All hail Zombee Brobee!

For the 9th topic we here at League Head Quarters have decided that the next topic shall be light and fluffy and spring forth from a roundish ball...I.E. your heads!

We'd like to see some new pokemon-esque creature designs! Most of us grew up during the initial onslaught of Pokemon and we've lived to tell the tale, but if you aren't one of the folks contributing to the $50 MILLION dollars that the Pokemon franchise STILL rakes in a year, then by all means do a bit of research prior to beginning your design!

My highest appologies for failing miserably to contribute to the last few challenges! I'm glad that there are at least a few people that are still posting and enjoying the blog, even though it has definately slowed down. When I can dedicate the time I would like to roll out some ideas that have been sitting around that would make the league more interactive and/or fun. All in good time :)

This small group of old people were drawn using a tablet PC that I'm...test driving. It's pretty boss. Takes a bit of getting used to on top of the fact that I've never owned my own laptop before, coupled with the annoyance at the moment of a lack of time to spend with the thing...but I'm starting to get to grips with it more. Oh, I've also never used Vista before and this sucker came loaded with Vista ULTIMATE. Ugh. But still cool!

I wonder if I'll just end up carrying this thing around with me everywhere instead of a sketchbook? Time will tell!

Ha ha! He looks more like an alien from Star Trek, but whatever. Some old men look like aliens anyways. I basically followed Sevenstrokes take on old people with the squinted eyes. Hell, maybe these two can date! If she doesn't mind pleasant decapitated heads with fur growing out of his ears. (And I don't know why I always forget that scanning blue pencil work hardly ever scans right...I'll never learn *sigh)

Guttentag Leaguers!

They say that it's harder to draw a face with a minimal amount of lines because each line has to be as close to the right position as possible. So, to make things a little easier this time around we're going to draw people that are COVERED with lines! OLD PEOPLE!

This is a good way to study how things display weight, be it through posture or through the sagging of skin on bones (Ew). Make 'em as ugly, pretty, cute, or crotchety as you please!

This is a toy plane from an old board game that I used to play with my cousins. I never knew what the game was called, haha~ but you end up brutally sabotaging the people that you're playing against! So although it looks cute.. it's pretty evil.

On another note, this film is actually what I thought of first when I read the challenge title. I saw it at TIFF last year and it was a wonderfully epic piece of animation. The website is in Japanese but you can view the movie trailer on the right hand side of the main page.

On yet another note... I still owe a submission for fortune tellers!

So here she is resting on top of a sugar plum. Tired from doing whatever she does (dancing and prancing with the Nutcracker, dodging hungry owls, who knows?!). Hopefully I will actually finish this illustration with colour one day. But for now, colorization + simple highlights will do. I really wanted to do something ballet-like but I really haven't been able to make a lot of time to draw something finished as I'm on a job that has nutso hours and doesn't really let me draw during the day. Anywho, I did the sketch above the other week when things were still a bit slow, but I haven't had a chance to take it into the final stages yet. I'm going to see what I can do about that though!
This was the very first idea that I had for this topic, which did not end up turning out as cool as I thought it would. I've had it sitting in draft mode for a while now, but I figured I'd post it along with my more thought out Sugar Plum Fairy. Here's a little story I came up with for this guy:

The Zombie Moth (also commonly known as the Galaxy Moth) has been nicknamed 'The Sugar Plum Fairy' for it's nearly insatable desire for the sweet innards of plums. The distinctive pattern on the Sugar Plum Fairy's wings help it to ward off would-be predators while it feasts on plums.

Wuddap jack! I couldn't resist but to give him... well... some Spirit lol I had way too much fun with this piece. I wanted to desaturated most of his colors except the scarf. Introducing Okapood =)

This is my multiple legged friend. I was inspired from one of the new short movies in France Here's the link. I've grown a liking to animals with it's tongue sticking out, plus the fact that I do it lots to make people laugh or smile. So yeah! I'm back, no more 3rd Semester so, I'll definitely come back and finally feel better!

Frenchy Fancy Fish!
Yeah that's right, he's so fancy he wears a monacle! What of it?!
This guy is a combination of many sea creature references, but so many I can't even remember them. I could tell you that the ears come from the Glowing Sucker Octopus.
This was also my failed attempt to make a cute creature; with the puppy-dog-arms stance and I previously had big eyes on it. But of course, it just turned out to be creepy. Anyways I thought maybe the stache might lighten it up a bit. But now he's just french.

"This funny looking squid is about the size of a small avocado and can be found most commonly in the deepwater (greater than 100 m or 320 ft) of virtually all oceans. Its habit of filling up with water and the funny location of its siphone with a wild-looking 'tuft' of eight arms and two tentacles had prompted scientists to name it the piglet squid."– Zooillogix

Voilà, a strange little find from the deep seas! Not too much info about these guys online... but for some reason, they really seem to swim like this (upside down?).

Update: So there's my final dude. I was completely influenced by Ian Macaig's Gnomon Visual Storytelling DVDs. I'm going to keep working on this one because I didn't really feel like I actually got into it and I really want to improve my digital painting skills, but at least it's up here :D Please please please critique the heck out of this piece by the way! Thanks!

Salute League members,

It's time to get organic again and create some...SEA CREATURES!

This can be ANYTHING that lives in the sea whether it's real (a 5 foot octopus) or fictional (a 500 metre octopus). League HQ suggests doing some research first because there are lots of weird sea creatures that live in the oceans that can be great sources of inspiration!

Well i was about a day late on what i said i was gonna post. Sorry for the massive delay, my life has been really hectic so i'm trying to get things in order. I have actually 4 sketches but they're more doodles that i need to rework so it looks more presentable. But it got me thinking of what i really wanted to try, which is something a tad different. Granted this isn't different at all to what i usually do but this was a robot that's been lingering in my head. I'll have more coming up once i get my wack life in order ^_^.

The official submission date on this challenge has been extended by one (1) week so that everyone gets a chance to work out the kinks in their designs. I'll admit that this is a tougher challenge than I was expecting...but that's the nature of challenges!

If I may, I would like to type a bunch of words that I hope you will all read...

The driving idea behind the League is to help inspire it's members to dust off that pencil, tablet, or marker, get the cobwebs out of that grey matter and simply revel in the joy of creation on a regular basis. Know this; you're posts really DO help to inspire others! It's a far more difficult task to go it alone than when you have good friends by your side...which is a lesson that I reconsidered recently and is the reason why The league itself exists. This will always be a friendly place where you can come to find and pass on inspiration!

Truth be told, aside from drooling over everyone's inspiring creations so far, I have also been really enjoying the comments that go with them! I can't wait to read the funny and insightful things people have to say, and reading the comments makes me feel great because I know that people are paying attention to everybody's work, even if just for a few moments!

So, be it a little developmental sketch (ala the image above) or a full-blown illustration, keep in mind that this is a place where people are happily waiting to see your work no matter what it is! Any work posted helps to inspire others to join in on the fun! It definately helps me!

I hope that this little blurb helped to clairify what the League of Creation is all about!

As I am currently in a bit of a rush to prepare to not be near my computer for the next 4 days, I will make this short and then elaborate it when I get back.

The 2nd challenge of The Order of the League of Creation! is to follow in the footsteps of the great Issac Asimov and attempt to bring life to cold, unfeeling metal. Your robots can be in any shape or form, any level of mechanical detail, and in any scenario that you like.

Let loose, try something new, and inspire your fellow League artist members! And of course...HAVE FUN!

Almost 22 hours left! Well here's my post, finally. It's not that it took me a long time to do, (as you can see from the sketch) but I'm just a horrible procrastinator.

So Mr. Underbite-Vamps just wanted to make a lasagna. But now he faces his unavoidable fate of being turned to stone. Poor him. Oh well, the other vampires didn't even like him anyways because of his reverse biting techniques. Unfortunately, he was actually in the process of making a revenge lasagna to teach those vampires a lesson.

Moral of the story: Revenge can be bitter sweet...or just garlic-ky.

Was meaning to just draw a cute vampire in vector but ended up drawing out this entire band from Konami's (Bemani) Pop'n Music..! Not such a popular game here but it's huge in Japan... very similar to the play style of Guitar Hero except you have up to 9 buttons to watch for instead of 5.

Ilmegrath -- Eldest Magium of the Nagrathey Clan

This will probably be my last submission for this topic as I have some other obligations to attend to this week and then the new topic will be posted on Monday. I wanted to add more items to help with the scale in this image because the Shaman is supposed to be really imposing in person, but I couldn't get them to work. I've tried a few other backgrounds and some character elements but they always fight with his silhoette, which I wanted to maintain. Hopefully you still get the sense that this is someone that you don't want to tangle with. If I met a dude in the forest who was floating off the ground a few inches I'd be heading in the opposite direct...

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind all current members to please remember to submit your topic suggestions, as at the moment I only have ones that I have come up with and a few submitted by Madd_Sketch, AKA Aaron. It would be great to have a bigger, more varied pool to draw from for the next topic, so try to get some in a.s.a.p! Thanks!

Here's a little story/background I came up with for this piece:

The Nagrathey (pronounced "Nag-rrrath-eh") are a clan of vampire that live in the borreal forests of North America and Eastern Europe. They hunt in packs, worship caribo, moose, and Elk (hence the antlers on his noggin') and are lead by a 7000 year old shaman. This happy fellow is a low-level hunter/scout who has spotted something tasty.

This is after a piece by Joe Mirabello that features an undead creature and it's unfortunate victim. It reminded me of the illustrations in the Vampire: The Masquarde books, which I've never had the nuts to attempt until today!

C&C are welcome on this as I would like to improve my ability to render light and shadow correctly in 2-Dimensions.

Vampire study, anatomy study, or tonal excercise?

Another attempt at a vampyre! This one is more of a nosferatu version. I'm finding that I tend to tighten up a lot quicker when drawing digitally, so he isn't as exaggerated and weird as I had originally intended. I'll have another crack at it soon :D

2. in league, working together, often secretly or for a harmful purpose; united.

The goal of The Order of the League of Creation! is to inspire and motivate it's members through monthly and bi-weekly art challenges. All members are welcome and encouraged to submit topics at any time to topicsofcreation@gmail.com, where they will then randomly be chosen for future challenges. The League would ask that all members attempt to submit at least 5-10 topics around the same time as their first or second post, and continue to submit topics regularly.

Members interpretations of the topics will not be limited in any way. You are free to submit finished pieces or sketches as you like. Volume is very much welcomed, so post as often as you like! Members should also note that they are not bound by the current topic and may post any artwork that they are proud of or which they believe will inspire fellow members.

Over the coming weeks and months this ultra secretive location (or "web-log") will undergo changes and additions for the benefit of all within the order. If you have a suggestion for improvement, simply contact an adminstrative member of The Order of The League of Creation!.
